SASPiPhi Ltd. Receives MHRA Clinical Trial Authorisation For The First-in-Human Clinical Trial Of SASPject PT3.9.

Cambridge, UK – 17th September 2026 SASPiPhi is delighted to announce that it has received Clinical Trial Authorisation from the UK Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) to initiate a Phase 1b/2a clinical trial of SASPject PT3.9. This authorisation is subject to clinical trial funding and insurance being in place, and final HRA Authorisation. The clinical trial, STEPS-CF, is a First-in-Human trial assessing safety and early efficacy of the engineered phage therapeutic, SASPject PT3.9, in people living with cystic fibrosis with lung infections due to Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The study is registered on the UK’s Clinical Study Registry with study registration number ISRCTN57413769. The study, which is expected to enrol between 44 and 64 participants, will be led by Chief Investigator Dr Freddy Frost (Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital), and NIHR Liverpool Clinical Research Facility, and will involve up to 10 other sites around the UK.

2025 Phage Therapy Workshop

SASPiPhi attended the Phage Therapy Workshop on November 25th at The Spine Building, Liverpool. The workshop was jointly hosted by the Universities of Manchester, Liverpool and Exeter, with funding from UK Research and Innovation and was led by a scientific committee consisting of experts in the field of phage therapy. The programme featured fascinating discussions around this groundbreaking area of antimicrobial research.



Heather Fairhead

SASPiPhi would like to express its profound gratitude to everyone who participated in and attended the moving memorial service for SASPiPhi’s Co-founder and Director, Dr Heather Fairhead, on 10th November 2025 at Madingley Hall, Cambridge. We are also very grateful for all donations to JustGiving in aid of the Arthur Rank Hospice Charity, and for the many kind messages received from friends and colleagues.

Heather was a talented scientist, and after graduating with a BSc from Nottingham University and a PhD from Sheffield University, Heather invented and developed SASPject technology. Heather became a successful entrepreneur and CEO of early stage biotechnology companies. Her achievements included 8 peer-reviewed publications, 8 patents and 25 posters presented to conferences worldwide. Her experience, leadership and energy will be greatly missed by the SASPiPhi team, as well as the wider scientific community. Heather’s SASPject legacy continues to be developed by the SASPiPhi team, aiming to realise our shared ambition to bring solutions to the problem of antibiotic resistance into the clinic.
